Continued from last month the outdoor flight!

Here we are making the pop hole, this is the part I hate, cutting into a good shed, we marked where the hole is to go and drilled four holes in each corner so we could use the jig saw to cut out the opening.

Now the opening has been created we lined the opening with 9mm plywood also make a landing board each side of the opening. To stop the budgies chewing the edges of the opening we used 3/4" angle aluminum around all three edges.

Now for the sliding door, we screwed two lengths of wood both sides of the opening wide enough to fix some angle aluminum to create a track for the perspex door the move up and down, we used perspex for a door as this will not swell when wet also we added some holes for ventilation and last of all it lets some more day light in.

Here is the pop hole finished, we built a cover over the sliding part to finish it off a bit better, you can not see on the photo but we have attached fishing line to the door then drilled a hole in the slopping lid and sent the line along the shed to the outside so when Tom wants to close the pop hole he can do so from outside the flight.

And here is the finished flight with birds in.

Next week will be the start of a new off topic project for me and Tom.

When we moved here the garden had a small fish pond which we all enjoyed, as the gold fish where getting bigger, we decided to dig out a bigger pond as you can see.

Here we are after a weekend of digging, now the hole is dug we need to finish the shelving off with sand.

The floor has a black membrane with sand on top.
Now all the shelving has been finished I am filling in any large holes on the walls plus removing any stones which may cut into the liner.
Here we are covering the walls with pond underlay to help protect the liner, I am glad it was not a windy day for doing this.
With the underlay in place I finished the floor with more sand trapping the edges of the underlay in place.
Now for the exciting bit, fitting the liner and filling, the liner is a firestone rubber.
This was a lovely job standing up to my middle in cold water on a roasting day, the pond will hold 9000 liters when full.

With the pond now full, next week will be spent finishing off the edges.

This week George Booth visited my bird room as he was down in Devon on holiday, me and George and my parents sat down and had a good long chat about the budgerigar society magazine, what happened in the past and what’s happening so far in his bird room. George loved my bird room as he took a few photos to feature in an article he might do in the BS magazine I was pleased to have him in my bird room and listened to what he had to say about my birds.

Thank You George!

Well last week I had my first show of the season, at Torbay B&FBS, I got three blues spots and two green spots (blue means best young bird) (green means best young bird opposite sex) so that was the best show I have ever had.

Torbay B&FBS

Blue spot winners

Oppline light green hen

Sky blue clerbody hen

Cinnamon yellow face grey cock

Green spots

Cinnamon dominate pied light green

Grey spangle hen

This week it was Western Counties Rare Variety show here I got one blue spot with my clearbody, I put my spangle in the wrong class however the judge said it was the best spangle he had ever seen so I was disappointed that I had put it in the wrong class.

We have just updated the Torbay B&FBS website with some of the photos from last weeks show www.torbaybfbs.com
