Java News!

Here I have started to use my new style nest box on a young pair of Javas, I am not to sure if they will breed because the cock is only six months old and the hen has only had one round of eggs and no chicks, again she is a young hen 13 months, the hen is a Agate and the cock is a normal split Agate.
Photo 1: Showing how well the nest box sits on the cage front.
Photo 2: It was so easy to hang this box, just a small hook and eye, it makes removing this box so simple.
Photo 3: Showing the new box with it's wide open front on the cage, to the left is the entrance, I will keep you posted on the progress of this box, I will try it out on other pairs.

Budgie News!

Today my mum and me transferred all the records that are on my breeding cards to the budgie society breeding register. It is important to keep good records as they will be needed for breeding in the following years to come, as you can see in the photo me and mum keeping are records up to date we fill out this book every weekend, and then transfer what’s in the book to our computer bird program called bird tracker

I have had three chicks hatch this week, one in each nest box and one of those three hatched out today as you can see in the photo. I have done a big update on my website this weekend as I have found some spare time to update it. I have some information on my latest news and have done a page on my 2009 youngsters, and as always my dairy page hope you enjoy reading my new updates.

Welcome to sunny Devon, what a week so far!

Here you can see even we got snow this week, but we where lucky it was not deep like the rest of Devon and other parts of the country. The birds are all nice and warm in their rooms this weather [ 18c ], a good reason why I insulate the sheds when building them, when I opened the roof hatch in Tom's bird room to see how cold it was compared to the bird room, the difference in temperature was unbelievable.

Java News!

Update on the new style breeding box, as you can see on the photo the Javas are starting to build, the pan of the nest is in the opposite corner from the entrance, I did not start the nest off for them this time I let them make that decision.

Here are three healthy chicks coming along, their parents are: Hen Normal split silver. Cock Silver. These will the the first chick to have the new JSSUK rings on.

Budgie News!

Last Sunday I came to a decision to remove the two light green babies from their original cage, as their father is a young cock and was not allowing the two light greens to sit on a perch, It looked like he was going to turn on those two in particular birds so we moved them  out, and put a calmer older bird out of the aviary in with them, so that they could learn how to sit on a perch and turn around however now all the babies have been reunited  and they are getting along well, as you can see in the photo.

The birds I brought of Brian Sweeting I paired one of the hens and she laid four full eggs and thankfully all four have hatched as you can see in the photo.

Also this weekend we have updated our bird club's website, have a look: www.torbaybfbs.com

All Budgie News This Week!

Here we go building again, Tom and I got up early today and got to the Totem timber wood yard in Plymouth for 9.00am to buy the wood needed for this project. As Tom's budgies are breeding well for him and all the available cages are full, he needs a holding pen, so he can transfer his chicks to a small flight when they are old enough to leave their parents, they stay in here for a while before going into the main flight.

Here I am enjoying a cup of tea! thinking to myself (what to do next!) I am lying it was all worked out on paper before I started, because this three tier mobile structure is going to sit in the middle of Tom's bird room we have to make it so it's not to bulky and can be move out the way when needed.

The height is 75" when the wheels are on, the length is 48" by 24" wide, when we finish it will have three flight cages all four sides will be mesh, only the floors and a small 5" lip around the edges will be solid. I will up-date as I go along, hopefully to carry on tomorrow.

As some of you might know a little while ago and I have paired one of the hens down that I brought of Mr Sweeting and she has laid 4 eggs, all 4 are full and they all hatched, as you can see in the photo they are all going to be yellow pied and green as the father has produced chicks before I think these chicks should look much the same.

Right here is a little lesson for you. I paired two sky blues together and one chick hatched which is a cinnamon sky blue now the answer to this is that the cock bird is split cinnamon because its father is split cinnamon, therefore the baby will be a hen as to produce a cock cinnamon you would need to have visual cinnamon parents.

We have got our bird table top sale next Sat 21st Feb | see more |

The second day making Tom's holding cages, here I am cutting the nine 5" strips needed to go along the bottom of each cage to stop the seed and floor covering from coming out. Again we had a good dry day for working outside, when the sun did come out it got quit warm.

This is how it is looking so far, still unfinished, but you can see what I am building, I have put the mesh on three sides, the front will take a while as there are doors to fit and make, also I have got to put a rail around each floor so the plywood can sit on this.

I am hoping to carry on with this after work each night, as Saturday is the table top sale so I will not have time to do much that day.

  22nd 2009

It has been a very busy weekend for Tom and me, we both went to our clubs table top bird sale on Saturday to help out with the setting up of the hall, we hade a good show of birds for sale, plus dry goods, we are doing another sale on Saturday 13th April.

On a sad note! the three baby Javas above (8th) I have lost two and think the third will go as well, the parents have stopped feeding them properly, all the Javas I have bred over the years this is the fist time I have had chicks at this age when the parents have stopped feeding.

Well it's been a lovely sunny weekend here in Devon, and Tom and I have cracked on and finished the mobile stack of three small flights for the baby budgies, this small project took more time than I thought, as you can see in the photo Tom did not waist any time getting some birds in on the top flight, we have made extra large doors for Tom to clean them out easily. the four wheels makes this whole unit very maneuverable in the bird room.
