At last the bird room is starting to look clean and bright, on Saturday we painted the whole room from roof to floor with vinyl silk, it has now had two coats, tomorrow we will cover this vinyl with dulux satinwood to give it a hard wipe-able finish

Tom has been working hard digging a trench along the length of the garden to enable us to lay pipes for the
water and to run two mains cables for the ring main

25th July 2008
We have now stopped with the pipe work as we cannot make the connections to the electric supply and the water
until we have moved the budgies out from the outhouse, they are in the way, however I have connected the ring
main to the bird room ready and the water will be connected when the sink goes in.
Here is Tom putting the last sheet of hardboard in. Now we are stapling the hardboard down.
Today we made a start on the floor; first of all we cut
the hard board sheets to lay over the shed floor to
give us a smooth surface in which to lay the self-adhesive
vinyl tiles, with all the hardboard down we then coated
this with waterproof unibond glue to seal the surface,
with the heat of the weather this did not take long to dry,
now we are ready for the tiles. As you can see we have
nearly finished the floor, hopefully we will finish it
tomorrow after the Exeter bird show we are in.

Here is the birdroom phase 1 finished, phase 2 will be all the cages and indoor flight plus the work area and sink,
the twelve punch bar cage fronts have been order from Brian Hyland and will be here in about two weeks,
we need the fronts here first before we can workout how big the work-top and flight will be, while we are waiting
for the cage fronts we need to dig out a large round hole to sink a water butt outside this will be our soak-away
for the sink to drain into. On the photo you can see the ring main cable coming in, when we have finished with
the work area you will not be able to see any of this.

The Soak Away
Tom has been busy today, I marked out the ground the night before where we need to dig a hole to sink a water
butt, I said to him if he wants to make a start next day to dig out the hole as he is off school for the summer and
I am at work, well when I got home he had started and finished digging, Wow! What a job Tom, all I had to do
was make the pipe connections to the butt, and then we back filled what was left of the hole, now we have the
soak away finished all in one evening.

Here is the Mole!! ( LOL) up to his middle Just trying the butt in the hole for depth
With the butt turned upside down we back filled the edges We have connected two pipes, one for the drain
water the other for air to escape

Breeding Cages

Here is the start of the 12 breeding cages, the cage fronts arrived
on Friday, so Friday night we made the frames to go-around them,
these cages the whole front and frame come off to make cleaning easier. The cages are constructed from standard size wood that
you can buy from most builders yards, every stage of this
construction has been photographed, I am putting together
a print off! Of all the wood sizes and tip’s about making
templates to build this breeding bank.

Just a quick update, we have been showing birds again today in Truro Cornwall, one very nice lady recognized Tom
off his website and came over to say hello to him, this made his day! Any way back to the bird room as you can see
we have been busy building the partition which contains a lot of Perspex to help keep the mess down as much as possible. The indoor flight is 6 foot wide and 10 foot long, over the next week we will be making the perches to go inside this with a rotary perch as well. The work top has also gone in this week with the sink in, all the plumbing has been done now in the shed, and we only need to make the connection to the water supply and electric the
other end. The cupboards under the breeding bank are now finished off, the space will be used to store Tom’s show cages amongst other things, and also the gap at the top of the breeding bank has been filled in and is ready to be painted. Tom is getting quite excited now as the end is almost near only a few bits and pieces left to do and
as I am on a week’s holiday this week we hope to have this project completed by next weekend (we hope).
When Tom is in the finished bird room we have one more thing to make and that is the nest boxes for the  breeding bank, we will of course update you with this information as and when it is done watch this space.
