Why Wire Cages?

Now that my son is into breeding budgies we have visited quite a few budgie breeders’ bird rooms in one of these bird rooms was rows of wire breeding cages hanging on the walls just using cup hooks to hang them off, what a good idea! This means you can move the cages around very easily while breeding, when breeding has finished the cage can be taken outside and power washed ready for uses again, there are no gaps for mites to gather into, the big plus is the birds can see each other and the air movement around the breeding bank of cages can move more freely (now damp corners)

These cages are only a third of the cost of the breeding cages I have built in the past; I use a punch-bar cage front and make the rest out of 19g 1”x ½” weld mesh, no more painting!! I can get around 16 to 18 cages out of a 30 meter roll of weld mesh at £36 a roll.

Cleaning the cages if you look at the photo the cages top and bottom have a 1” gap between them in this gap you lay a sheet of stiff plastic on the tops of the cages this means the mess does not drop into the cage below, if you cut the plastic long enough you can clean four cages at a time, just slide the plastic sheet out and knock off the mess take it outside and use the hose pipe on it and pop it back in place.

Here is one I made earlier!
As javas don’t chew like budgies do, I can get away with using small plastic pull-ties to hold the cage together, on the budgie cages we have to use metal c-clips. These cages are so light to carry and easy to take off the wall, it’s not a problem taking the cages outside on a warm day so the birds can get some fresh air, plus it lets the wind blow out any dust.

My punch-bar cage fronts are 28”x 15”.I have made the cages 17” wide this minimizes the weld mesh wastage.

Warning
If you use this breeding type of cage with the gap at the bottom, the Javas can not forage on the floor for spear seed like in a solid bottomed cage, this means the seed pots need regularly toping up so the birds don’t go hungry.

How The System Works
You need to fit two batons along the entire wall the length will depend on how many cages you are using, the top baton will house the two cup hooks pair cage the bottom baton is only there to keep the cage sitting straight, the
next two rows of batons set an 1” gap or more if you want to, when complete just hang your cages up, job done!

Java's enjoying the afternoons outdoor experience. Do not leave out unattended (CAT'S!!) One more good thing! it's a good way of taking photos in natural light

Hopefully when I have made all the cages I need I will add some more photos to this page, at the moment I am making budgie cages so my son can pair his birds up, so he has got some young birds for the shows next year, my hobby has now doubled with the boy.
