Paddy Rice Paddy rice is a kind of rice which gets its name
from the paddy bird (Java sparrow) allot of imported birds are feed on this
until they are weaned on to canary seed. My Java's love this seed.
Hemp Seed
Hemp seed most seed eating birds love it but it should be fed sparingly, because
it is very fatting, also its a heat food for the winter months.
Groats Groats are only de-husked oats. Once again
oats are a good winter food. Soaked Groats are very good when Java's are feeding
their young
Canary Seed Canary seed forms the basic diet for most seed
eating birds. I use allot of this in my seed mix, there are about four types
of canary seed I know of.
Mazagan Canary
Moroccan Canary
Australian Canary
Canadian Canary
White Millet Seed White millet is a another recommended size for your
Java finch. There are many different sizes and colours of millet seeds on
the market, because we are talking about Java's here we need the large millets.
Panicum millet is very small ideal for the smaller finches.
Red Millet Seed Red millet is a good size for Java's. With the seed
being dark reddish brown in colour its appearance is exceptionally shiny

Sparrows are quite easy to keep and feed; the requirements for a basic diet
is a good quality budgies food mixture, consisting of large white millets (proso
millet) and plain canary seed. But I like to make a mixture of my own. The bulk
of this mix is the highest grade of budgie mix you can get from the pet shop
or seed merchants. Now I add the following to 25kg of the budgie mix. Churn
all the seed-up and keep in containers with tight fitting lids when finished
mixing.
The reason I add more seed to the budgie mix is to improve the number of
millets and canary seeds also Java's do like bigger seeds which you don't
get in the budgie mix e.g. Groats, paddy rice, hemp. In the past I have tried
different types of larger seed just to experiment and see what Java's would
take, safflower seeds and small sunflower seeds the Java's did not touch at
all
There are many different types of seed on the market from all over the world
you could try. My seed mix is what I stay with and use all the time now. Swapping
and changing their seeds can upset the Java's especially when feeding young.
I say when you have found a good mix stay with it.

How
to go about making my seed mix
My tips for saving seed (don't
put any out! Joke!) Blow the empty husks off daily so the Java's are not digging
and scattering good seed all over the place.
Millet
sprays always go down well with my Java's it makes a brake from their boring
old seed mix, I hang four or five sprays up twice a week. You can use them dry
or soaked, whatever way they soon go.
