Welcome Inside My New Working Bird Room
Phase 1 Of 2 Completed March to November 2003

Hi!
What can I say my birdroom is finished at last; this room has all the faults taken out from my last room, it has been built with more thought and the birds comfort, plus ease of use by the bird keeper. When building a bird room its not a question of how many cages can I stuff in, you need a lot of storage space as well, this room has 18 cages, 12 for breeding and 6 for transferring fledglings before going in the off spring flights where they will stay until they get their adult colours. I have storage under the bank of cages, under the sink plus a wall mounted cupboard, when breeding stops I need to put the 12 breeding boxes away in theses spaces. The best thing about this bird room is the sink and preparation area, this is the first bird room I have ever had with such a luxury, my birds plus my wife will benefit from this, no more seed around the kitchen sink in the house or traipsing seed in and out when I come in for water, I can now make all my soak seed and leave it out, clean all the drinking vessels and feeding containers, I have an electric kettle to boil hot water when cleaning cages, plus I can wash my hands after handling the birds. All the hard work putting this sink in and laying the waste and fresh water supply has paid off.

The running of the bird room is all done with time switches, I have a full time job to do, plus children to look after so I can not be there at the right times to switch things on and off all the time. The main lights are timed to come on just before it goes dark of an evening and go off at midnight, giving me plenty of time to feed and water, just before the main lights go off at night, I have a red night light which comes on ten minuets before the main lights go off, this red light stays on all night until daybreak.
I have the heating on a time switch, so the heating comes on in the evening and stays on through the night until about 9.30 next morning, the heater has a thermostat and is set only to come on if the temperature drops to freezing, it may not come on at all in the slotted time, but its there if the temperature does drop, this timer I only use in the winter months. The extractor fan is timed to come on twice a day for an hour each time, this is long enough to change the air in the bird room, this will make a healthy environment for the birds, I have it come on an hour after the heating is timed to go off plus an for an hour in the afternoon, two hours before the heating is timed to come on. The extractor fan time is extended to come on for, four hours in the afternoon in the summer months. The birds have a radio playing 24 hours a day every day.
Having every thing running on time switches, the birds seem to get us to things happening, like at night they all start to roost when the red light comes on knowing the main lights will go off very soon, plus an other advantage of running everything with time switches is when you need to ask some one to look after the birds for two weeks while you go on holiday, all they need do is feed and water, the room will look after it' self.

This is me the proud owner of a new bird room, I will be spending alot of time here observing my birds, from here I can see all 12 breeding cages plus look into the three internal flights. My seed bucket doubles up as a good seat.

My preparation area, this part of the birdroom is one of the best things I have done! already its making life much easier, when inside my birdroom I don't have to leave until all the feeding and watering has been done, everything I need is in this area, soap, disinfectant, eggfood, kettle, dishes, Hoover, hand towels, ect!

Feeding time! here I am using the sliding doors I put in the internal flights, from here I can easily hang millet sprays, lettuce , change seed pots, while working here I have the top of the cages to put things on, leaving my hands free. Above my head are some of the time switches and extractor fan

Breeding has already started in the birdroom, I have paired up twelve breeding pairs for each cage, if I ever needed to pair more Java's I have six more cages behind me. Nest inspection is easier with flip lid nest boxes, as you can see.

One thing all bird rooms need, is plenty of storage spaces, these are the drop down cupboards I made under the
cages, I like to use old sweet jars to put all my bits and bobs in, I get the jars free from my local sweet shop, they are glad to give them away, you can put millet sprays in, coconut fiber in, cuttel fish bones in, and many other things in, it's a good way of keeping things clean and vermin proof.

Well it's time to lockup and go, many thanks for visiting and I hope you have enjoyed watching me build this bird room from start to finish, if so tell me on a e-mail or you may have a question to ask, please do! e-mail

Don't forget I will be starting my external flights very soon!
